Designing for our future selves: Entertainment and its place in the lives of older cohorts
Often ‘othering’ takes place when we think of cohorts at the margin. The key objective of this talk is to make our listeners understand that when we are designing for the older cohorts, we are designing for our future selves. In this talk, we will explore the importance of research and collaboration while incorporating equity-centred design approach and designing for/with the margins. We will understand this with a research conducted at Zee Entertainment to understand the needs of older cohort (people above 55 years) when it comes to content access, consumption and exploration.
In the talk we will build a case for why organisations should design for/with the margins. We will take our listeners on a journey where they will understand;
- Why content is not just a device for entertainment but a source of secure attachment for the older folks?
- Further, even when content plays an important role in the lives of the older folks, why do they often have to let go of their entertainment needs?
- Finally, we hope that we will be able to make our listeners understand that the older cohort should not be treated as a ‘different’ cohort – rather it’s us in a couple of decades.
By sharing examples from this research from discovery phase of accessibility for older cohorts, I hope that I will be able to make a strong case for equity-centred design and designing for the margins for building inclusive products.
