Laura Herman is currently the Head of AI Research at Adobe and the Co-Director of the Inclusive AI Lab at Utrecht University. She received her PhD from the University of Oxford’s Internet Institute, where her academic research examined the impact of algorithmic curation on global visual cultures, taking an inclusive and international approach with a particular focus on the Global South.

At Adobe, Laura leads the team that researches Generative AI for Creative Cloud. Previous technologies that she has worked on have been acknowledged as Apple’s “App of the Day” and as a Webby People’s Choice Award winner. Laura has previously held research positions at Intel, Harvard University, and Princeton University, where she studied Neuroscience & Psychology.

A common thread runs through Laura’s research: an investigation of how emerging technology influences human artistry. Her understanding of the creative process has been deepened by her own artistic & curatorial practice, through which she has exhibited projects at the Tate and at Ars Electronica. Laura has also been a “Researcher-in-Residence” at the studio of Olafur Eliasson and has contributed to the Serpentine Galleries’ Future Art Ecosystems report. Laura’s curatorial and research work has been covered by venues such as the BBC, Forbes, Artnet, New Scientist, Newsweek, and the Wall Street Journal.

Laura sits on the Boards of Trustees for two arts organizations: Eastside, which provides creative education for historically marginalized youths, and the Old Fire Station, which serves as an artistic hub for people experiencing homelessness.
